How to Help Your Highly Sensitive Child Relax After School

If your child holds it together all day at school only to completely unravel the moment they get in the car, you are not alone. Here is how to create a decompression routine that actually works.

The After-School Collapse Explained

Highly Sensitive Children (HSCs) process sensory input and emotions much more deeply than their peers. A standard classroom—with its buzzing fluorescent lights, loud cafeteria, and complex social dynamics—is a sensory marathon.

When they finally reach the absolute safety of home, they drop their guard. This "after-school restraint collapse" often looks like crying, yelling, or unreasonable demands over small things (like the wrong colour cup).

A 3-Step Routine Using Mindfulness

Instead of immediately asking "How was your day?" or rushing to the next activity, try this 15-minute decompression routine.

1. The Sensory Detox

Sensitive nervous systems need immediate relief from input. When they walk in the door, give them 15 minutes of zero demands. Keep the lights low, avoid asking questions about school, and turn off background music or screens. Offer a crunchy or chewy snack, which provides regulating proprioceptive input to the jaw.

2. "Heavy Work" Grounding

The most effective way to calm a dysregulated nervous system is through the body. We use specific "Rainbow Feelings" yoga poses for this. Have them try the Turtle Pose (Child's Pose). It blocks out visual input and applies deep pressure to the body, making them feel secure, grounded, and safe.

3. The Colour Check-In

Asking an exhausted child "What's wrong?" requires too much cognitive processing. Instead, we use the Rainbow Feelings method. Ask them: "What colour is your brain right now?"

  • Red: Overwhelmed, angry, too much energy.
  • Blue: Exhausted, sad, needing quiet.
  • Green: Starting to feel peaceful again.

This allows them to communicate their internal state without the pressure of finding complex words.

Need more support for your sensitive child?

The Rainbow Feelings method was built specifically with highly sensitive children in mind. We teach them how to confidently navigate their big emotions.
