My child has big emotions or meltdowns. What helps first?
Do not begin with explanations while their body is still on high alert. Stay nearby, lower your voice and reduce stimulation. Briefly name what you see: ‘This feels like a lot.’ Talk about what happened and one helpful next step only after your child is calm.
- ✓Make the moment safe and quiet
- ✓Slow your own breathing
- ✓Name without judging
- ✓Reflect after calm returns
